Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia: A Reader’s Edition
Authors: Donald R. Vance, George Athas, Yael Avrahami
Publisher: German Bible Society
This is the Hebrew Bible I recommend for students of BSE’s Biblical Hebrew courses. The text behind the BHSRE is the Leningrad Codex, which has been the standard foundation for Old Testament work for many reasons. The BHSRE uses a very readable font and includes contextual definitions of words on each page that occur 70 or fewer times, along with parsing information. It does not include the BHS critical apparatus, but, to be honest, if you’re going to do high level text-critical work, you’re not going to depend on the BHS critical apparatus, and if your purpose is simply to read the Bible in its original languages, you won’t be using the critical apparatus anyway. So for students of our Biblical Hebrew courses, this is the perfect solution.
